Om Nama Shivaya is the mantra of the Lord Shiva and Lord Parvathi. Various meanings are related to the mantra. Certainly, the Chanting of the mantra is done by the soul to get maturity in life. The mantra has the power to reduce the Karma effects which come to us.
Especially, There are three types of Chanting the mantra.

The Om Namah Shivaya and Shivaya mantras both are the mantras of Lord Shiva. The Om Namah Shivaya Mantra indicates the Dhrodhana Shakthi. ie. Shakthi Shows the earth to create wishes and hides the Lord Shiva. In Shivaya Namah Mantra the Shiva comes at first. Here Shakthi shows Lord Shiva and hides the Earth’s wishes. This is considered to be the Arul Shakthi.

Certainly, We can chant the Om Namah Shivaya mantra as many times as we want. It does not mean that we want to chant several times. Our interest plays a very important role. It makes the connection with the divine and lifts in the Meditation. It is good to get a Deeksha from the Guru so that the mantra power increases if we practice the Mantra daily. If the Soul gets maturity then the God himself comes and gives Dheeksha to reach the God Lord Shiva. This is considered to be the Grace of the Lord Shiva.
